Leona Lewis Hits No.1    ·    December 20th, 2006

Great news for Leona, her first single ‘A Moment Like This’ is already number one. Her debut single flew off the shelves as soon as the stores opened at 9am, pretty impressive for a newcomer.

X Factor winner Leona Lewis is already the Christmas No1 - hours after her debut single went on sale in the shops.

Copies of the 21-year-old Londoner’s cover of the Kelly Clarkson hit A Moment Like This began flying off the shelves at record stores as they opened at 9am today.

She had already sold 150,000 downloads - meaning that she is now effectively in the top spot.

Lewis, mentored by X Factor judge Simon Cowell, needed to notch up around 200,000 single sales to achieve No1 this Christmas.

Record industry insiders predict she could achieve as many as one million sales by Sunday -far exceeding last year’s X Factor winner Shayne Ward’s total of 740,000 in his first week.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: “Leona’s single is already the fastest selling download in history and is now almost guaranteed to be the fastest selling single of the year.

“There has been a huge response to her as a contestant and when you consider eight million votes were cast then you have to assume a good deal of those people will be buying the song.”

He said her sales will be driven this week mostly by mothers and young girls.

“They are not generally in the download market so it will be mums buying copies as stocking fillers for their daughters, perhaps even multiple copies as gifts, that will drive hard single sales this week,” he added.

Leona’s Story: I Was Close To Quitting    ·    December 19th, 2006

Leona has who is about to become an international superstar has revealed in a recent interview with the sun that she had considered quitting and giving up all hope of a music career just months before X Factor, which has launched her career.

The 21-year-old singer revealed she was depressed at her lack of success and close to giving up when she first auditioned for ITV1’s hit talent show.

In her first and only interview, Leona — who has now scooped a £1million record contract — told The Sun: “A few months before the X Factor, I decided to give it just one more year then give up.

“So if I hadn’t got through the audition, I might be doing something else now.

“I’ve been trying to break into the record industry since I was 14.

“But it’s so hard and there were lots of times I thought, ‘Oh, I don’t know if this is going to happen’.

“This has come along at just the right time. It’s like a fairy tale — and this is the happy ending.”

And she credits her childhood sweetheart Lou Al-Chama for persuading her to give the X Factor audition one last shot.

She says: “He’s always known I wanted to do music and he’s so happy my dreams are coming true. He’s been so supportive.”

Emotional Leona collapsed in tears at the end of Saturday’s final after spotting Lou and her parents in the audience.

She said: “I was keeping it together at the final but when I sang the last line I saw Lou and my family out of the corner of my eye and they were all crying, and I just went. I call him my family because we’re so close.

Why Leona will be huge in U.S    ·    December 19th, 2006

Simon has spoken to the sun about why Leona will be huge in the U.S, and that her talent will conquer the globe.

“Leona can be an enormous star in America and I’m going to make sure of it.

She has got everything it takes to become a big success there and I know I can help her to crack it.

In Britain we don’t get as excited about successful female singers as they do over there.

But in the US they have a rich history of hugely successful women artists from the likes of Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston to Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera.

Her tale is similar to American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson. Kelly was working as a cocktail waitress and entered the competition as a last-ditch attempt to crack the record industry.

Leona’s story isn’t too different from that. She’s a quiet, unassuming girl from Hackney who has tried almost everything to break into the industry and who viewed X Factor as her last chance before giving up.

She’s quiet, female and of mixed race which is unusual compared to previous reality talent competition winners. Above all, what Americans seem to love is genuine talent and that’s what Leona has in bundles.

She will also have an advantage over other winners of these kinds of shows in that I can help open doors for her in the US — like I did for Il Divo — and I’m confident Americans will fall in love with her.

Leona Has What It Takes To Break The States    ·    December 18th, 2006

Clive Davis, the chief of J Records (part of Sony BMG) in the US home to Alicia Keys and Whitney Houston among others has told Simon he wants to make Leona Lewis with the amazing voice a huge star in the united states.

Simon said, “Leona has a commitment to go and see Clive. It’s an amazing opportunity. I believe she’ll be up there with Mariah and Whitney. It’s a fairytale ending.”

Which means we could be seeing lovely Le, like Mariah, linking up with the likes of Pharrell Williams and Snoop Dogg in future.

After scooping 60% of the votes and winning a £1million record deal during Saturday’s final, Leona has since admitted she came close to jacking a singing career in all together.

“I was so down at getting nowhere that I was about to give it all up and then I had one more chance - the X Factor audition,” she said.

“Now look at what there is for me, it’s almost too much to take in. I wanna do this for the rest of my life.”
